The 2MASS XSCz all-sky galaxy map, with galaxies colored by redshift and the Milky Way across the center.
2MASS XSCz galaxy map, preserved from the original notebook. A view of the universe to explore; the map itself provides no evidence of a warp drive.

The starting point

The Gate begins with a title, a map, and a paper: Alexey Bobrick and Gianni Martire’s Introducing Physical Warp Drives. This is an opening research note from The Elysium Project, with its sources and questions placed in the public record.

Bobrick and Martire describe theoretical warp geometries that include slower-than-light, positive-energy configurations. Their treatment also makes an essential distinction: a warp drive still requires propulsion. A spacetime geometry does not supply its own means of acceleration. These mathematical models do not demonstrate a constructed transport device or establish a usable faster-than-light gateway. [1]

What is stopping us?

David Kipping’s Cool Worlds video, What’s Stopping Us From Building a Warp Drive?, is a companion reference for this inquiry. Its central question gives this note a useful direction: what must be established between describing a possible geometry and building something that can carry a traveler? [2]

One relevant obstacle is stability. Finazzi, Liberati, and Barceló found severe semiclassical instability in the dynamical superluminal warp geometries they analyzed, including growing quantum stress near the front wall. Their result concerns those models; it is not a demonstration that every imaginable transport geometry has been ruled out. [3]

Inference · An open question

The next useful step is to specify a geometry, calculate the matter and energy it requires, and test whether it can be formed, controlled, and kept stable. Calling the idea a “gate” does not resolve those requirements or establish a connection between distant locations. It gives the inquiry a name. The mechanism remains an open question.
